iVerify Apps
What is it?
iVerifyApps, is the set of Node.js applications responsible for the integration and data analysis layers in the iVerify toolkit to be used to deal with information pollution (disinformation) and hate speech nationally.
Why it was developed?
IVerify processes articles and generates reports to determine their veracity. Entries are either manual, made by members of the public or the iVerify team, or automated. People can submit articles for review via text (WhatsApp, SMS and more) or directly through the iVerify platform. Taking advantage of CrowdTangle, which allows iVerify to track public content on social media, iVerify also automatically analyzes articles on Facebook, Instagram and Reddit on a daily basis, running them through Detoxify, an open-source algorithm that uses machine learning to detect hate speech.
The reports are then sent to the team of face-to-face fact-checkers, made up of individuals linked to one or several national counterparts who have been trained and equipped through the iVerify initiative. As part of their fact-checking task, the team follows up with the people or institutions mentioned in a story to determine the veracity of the claims made. If these personal fact-checkers find hate speech, disinformation or misinformation, they flag it and publish an article on the iVerify website to inform the world. iVerify uses the open source technology, Meedan Check, to help. It uses human-in-the-loop machine learning to match content, so that anything already labeled as fake doesn't need to be reviewed again, improving efficiency.
Why we are sharing it?
The solution is made up of 5 custom components (iVerify Dashboard, WordPress site, Dashboard API, Publisher bot, Triage bot) plus 3 external components integrated into the solution (Meedan Check, CrowdTangle, Perspective/Detoxify). Each custom component is deployed as an independent application in a dedicated Docker container. These are
The WordPress site container
The iVerify dashboard container
The dashboard API container
The editor bot container
The Triage bot container
