AI-powered open-air dump detection system
Tool description:
The tool allows for the identification and delimitation of landfills at different scales in satellite and aerial images, based on the training of an image classification algorithm based on artificial intelligence (AI).
What problems does it solve?
Taking advantage of the growing availability of open geospatial data, high-resolution satellite images, and open-source machine learning algorithms, this methodology for automated detection allows for the analysis of large areas of land to detect landfills, of all scales, helping to identify sites previously unknown to experts and local authorities. The tool makes previously non-existent or difficult-to-access information available to solid waste management at a low cost, with high frequency and easily replicable in different areas, allowing for quasi-real-time monitoring of the evolution of these sites.
How does it work?
The methodology is described in a brief practical manual, accompanied by Python code notebooks that implement step by step the process of training and applying a neural network model for the detection of open-air dumps.
Use case:
The Government of the City of Mendoza, Argentina, used this artificial intelligence methodology to monitor urban waste management, stop the proliferation of micro-dumps and prevent them from consolidating in an area of great ecosystem fragility.
